When acetylene comes into contact with solid silver, silver acetylide is formed on the surface of silver. Silver acetylide possesses all the properties of **, and among metal acetylides, it has the greatest explosive power. Prolonged contact between acetylene and solid copper also produces highly explosive copper acetylide. Acetylene does not directly form acetylene mercuride with metallic mercury, but it does form explosive acetylene mercuride when in contact with solutions of mercury salts. Acetylene reacts with sodium metal in liquid ammonia to produce sodium acetylide and release hydrogen gas.
