Let’s give praise and support to the achievements made in China’s chemical engineering technology and equipment; your participation in discussions is the greatest encouragement. **********************【Ten Years of Progress in Chemical Engineering Equipment】A continuously updated summary post – feel free to join the discussions: https://bbs.hcbbs.com/thread-3576046-1-1.html ***************** The first domestic certificate for epoxy resin used in thin-film LNG carriers was issued. May 7, 2025: On April 18, the 725-H96 epoxy resin and LNG recondensation system developed by CSIC 725 Research Institute received GTT certification and CCS approval, and an supply agreement for this 725-H96 epoxy resin was successfully signed with Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. This significant breakthrough is expected to break the market monopoly held by foreign companies, enable the substitution of imported key materials, and provide solid support for the full domestic production of LNG carriers in China; it holds great significance for enhancing China’s international competitiveness in high-end shipbuilding. According to the relevant officials, due to the high difficulty of construction, the advanced technical requirements, and the extremely strict demands regarding reliability, LNG carriers, which are used for transporting liquefied natural gas in extreme cold conditions of -163°C, are considered the \"jewels in the crown\" of the shipbuilding industry, alongside aircraft carriers and large cruise ships. Among these, epoxy resin serves as the primary core material for the membrane-type LNG ship containment system; it performs functions such as bearing weight, bonding, and leveling between the plywood insulation box and the ship’s hull. It is crucial for reducing leaks and evaporation of liquefied natural gas during the operation of LNG ships, and until now, it has had to be imported. The 725—H96 epoxy resin developed by this company achieves strong adhesion to a variety of substrates, and possesses excellent mechanical strength under extreme cold conditions; it meets the requirements of automated molding and assembly processes in shipyards. It is now available in large-scale production, laying the foundation for future entry into international markets and for its use in domestic applications. It is understood that during the initial stages of research and development, the 725 Institute set as its goal the use of domestic materials and relied on innovation-driven approaches. After dozens of rounds of testing and screening of key materials, as well as more than 20 rounds of optimization of process parameters, it achieved several key technological breakthroughs, including the maintenance of mechanical properties at ultra-low temperatures, stable control of product quality, and adaptation of the resin strip manufacturing process. Next, the 725th Research Institute will further promote the independent and self-sufficient development of China’s LNG carrier industry, continuously enhance the competitiveness of domestically produced high-end ships, and make greater contributions to accelerating the construction of a strong manufacturing nation and a maritime power.
As globally recognized as special ships with the highest construction difficulty, greatest technical complexity, strictest reliability requirements, and highest added value – the so-called \"three-high\" ships – the capability to build LNG carriers is currently in the hands of only a few countries. China has now become one of the world’s leading countries in building membrane-type LNG carriers. As the holder of the patent technology for membrane-type LNG carrier hull systems, French company GTT’s certification is an essential requirement for relevant key materials to enter the international market. As the primary core material for the membrane-type LNG carrier containment system, epoxy resin performs key functions such as load bearing, leveling, and bonding; it must meet stringent requirements of maintaining excellent mechanical properties even in ultra-low temperature environments of -163°C. For a long time, China has relied entirely on imports for the epoxy resins required in the construction of LNG carriers. Through independent innovation, Institute 725 has successfully broken through foreign technological blockades; the epoxy resins it developed have received certification from the French company GTT as well as approval from the Chinese Classification Society, and it now has the capability to supply these materials on a large scale. According to Huizheng Information, CSIC 725 Institute has been committed for a long time to developing high-performance materials to support the efforts aimed at building a strong maritime nation. As early as 2006, 725 Institute put forward the innovative concept of \"one institute, two systems.\" After more than a decade of exploration, it developed a research model that involves \"producing and selling one generation of products, developing and registering another generation, and conducting preliminary research on yet another generation,\" thereby shifting from \"following and imitating\" to \"independent innovation.\" 725 Institute will continue to intensify its efforts in the research and development of new materials for high-tech ships. It will work on major projects such as innovation in the LNG equipment industry chain and digitalization of ship assembly processes. It will also advance research initiatives related to the industrialization of epoxy resins and biomimetic anti-fouling coatings. The institute will actively participate in key projects within the industry chain, such as those involving 10,000-watt laser-arc composite welding equipment and complete sets of vacuum electron beam equipment for thick titanium alloys. By doing so, it aims to address the shortcomings in the development of advanced offshore engineering solutions and high-tech ships, thereby supporting the implementation of strategies aimed at making China a leading country in shipbuilding. In October 2022, Institute 725 and Huachang Company signed a cooperation agreement in Luoyang to promote the use of new materials such as high-performance epoxy resins, vinyl resins, and highly corrosion-resistant, fire-resistant and antistatic coatings in the shipbuilding, wind power, and offshore engineering sectors. In the design and production of membrane-type LNG carriers, in 2024, Jiangnan Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, successfully delivered China’s first large-scale Mark III Flex membrane-type LNG carrier, the “AL SHELILA”. The thickness of the epoxy resin strips in the ship’s enclosure system had a C2/C3 ratio of over 85%, while the flatness of the insulation panels was less than 0.5 mm – well below the 1.5 mm threshold required by GTT. The SBTT value of this vessel was also superior to international standards.
