Different SIL levels have different requirements
The instruments of the SIS system and those of the DCS system must be separate. If a measurement point in a process is required to participate in both control and interlock functions, it depends on the SIL level. SIL0 can be achieved by using one instrument connected to the DCS system for control and interlocking, while SIL1 and above require a separate instrument connected to the SIS system for interlocking purposes. It is completely separated from the control of the DCS system. Therefore, interlocks do not necessarily require a SIS system; however, if a SIS system is already in place, the instruments related to that SIS system should be used solely for interlocking purposes within the SIS system, separate from the DCS system.
