What is the actual performance of fishbone pads? Do they truly work as miraculously as claimed under high temperature and pressure? And then there’s the price! How many wrapping pads can be bought with one fishbone pad?
A fishbone gasket mainly consists of three components: a metal skeleton that is integrally formed in a fishbone shape, multiple layers of coaxial inclined teeth facing the fluid, and non-metallic sealing fillers such as graphite or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) applied to both the upper and lower surfaces of the gasket. Customers can freely choose whether to require a reinforced inner ring. Regardless of the choice, fishbone gaskets can be used alternately with gaskets of traditional designs, such as wound gaskets and serrated gaskets that have the same outer diameter, inner diameter, and thickness.
I’ve never seen this thing before, only heard of it; I’m not aware of its exact purpose. In high-temperature conditions (above 450 degrees), since some manufacturers do not have suitable high-temperature seals, they have adopted a different approach by modifying the design of the product to achieve a sealing effect. Our company has high-temperature gaskets made from vermiculite. Used for operating conditions above 450 degrees.
These gaskets are expensive. Regardless of the type of gasket used, it is necessary to ensure low stress in the pipeline design, appropriate bolt strength, intact flanges, consistent tightening, and no damage to the gasket throughout the process; however, it can sometimes be difficult to guarantee all of these conditions!
