The second floor is supported; an intrinsically safe circuit must consist of components from the measuring instrument to the safety barrier, and some cables as well – all of which need to be of the intrinsically safe type in order for it to be considered an intrinsically safe circuit. At present, some types of instruments can only be made intrinsically safe, so it is not practical to force them to be intrinsically flameproof. Based solely on this statement, my understanding is that the GDS system does not require the installation of safety barriers; therefore, it can be inferred that the field instruments can use explosion-proof designs. Additionally, the explosion-proof type is suitable for areas: it can only be installed in hazardous areas classified as Zone 1 or Zone 2. Intrinsic safety application areas: (1) E*a: Devices that can maintain their explosion-proof properties even in the presence of failures in two components or other types of faults. Intrinsic safety devices can be installed in Zone 0, Zone 1, and Zone 2 hazardous areas. E*a intrinsically safe equipment is the only explosion-proof electrical equipment that can be installed in Zone 0. (2) E*b: Devices that can maintain their explosion-proof properties even in the event of a failure in a component or some other type of fault. Most two-wire instruments can be made intrinsically safe. For gas detection, LEL catalytic combustion types cannot be designed as two-wire intrinsically safe types; therefore, most of them are three-wire flameproof types. Gas detectors operate on electrochemical principles, and it is possible to make them intrinsically safe in a two-wire configuration. For consistency, the design specifies the gas as flameproof to facilitate wiring and management.
