Are rectifiers in front of flow meters rarely used in practical engineering?

In previous engineering designs, if there was not enough straight pipe section for the flow meter, engineers would generally discuss the matter with the pipeline specialists in order to modify the piping layout; if that didn’t work, they might even change the type of instrument used. Yet it seems that few engineers consider using flow straighteners – why is that? Theoretically, these devices have many advantages, so why are they not used as often in practice?
Expensive! It would be great to have a valve that can be adjusted!
