A project was designed at the XX big data center. Its backup power supply consists of 9 diesel generators, each with a capacity of 2000 kVA. There is also a diesel tank with a volume of 100 cubic meters, from which fuel is supplied to the fuel tanks of the diesel generators through pipelines. An emergency shut-off valve is installed at the outlet of the diesel tank, and it is controlled remotely by the company’s fire control system. My current design plan is as follows: 1. The stop valve should be electric, equipped with a handwheel, as well as local operation capabilities and self-diagnosis functions ; 2. The AC220V power supply is powered by the fire protection power supply ; 3. The control cables are NH-KVVP cables, while the power cables are NH-WDZN-YJY cables ; 4. Install emergency cut-off buttons in the fire control center, to be manually activated by human judgment in case of a fire. But the owner wants the emergency shut-off valve to cut off automatically. I think this is a backup power source; once the external power supply fails, and if diesel supply is interrupted, then the backup power source will also fail. This would affect data security in the data center, so I designed it to require manual confirmation and shutdown by the fire control center. Has anyone encountered this situation? What did you do?
The design of emergency shut-off valves indeed requires a comprehensive consideration of both safety and the continuity of equipment power supply. In this case, it is reasonable that you chose the manual shutdown method to ensure that the power supply to the data center can be maintained in emergency situations such as fires. Regarding whether automatic shutdown should be implemented, the owner’s concern may stem from the desire to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment to the greatest extent possible in any abnormal situation; however, as you mentioned, this approach could lead to a disruption in the supply of backup power in case of a fire, thereby affecting the operation of the data center. Generally, it is recommended to communicate thoroughly with the owner regarding the risks and consequences, and to develop a solution that is acceptable to both parties, taking into account the requirements of critical operations in the data center. Your design choices are conservative but necessary to ensure that the data center can continue to operate in emergency situations. At the same time, it is possible to consider adding some automatic monitoring systems to detect potential risks in advance, thereby allowing for timely human intervention without disrupting the power supply. .

Thank you. Indeed, my design tends to be conservative. However, diesel generators are installed in data centers as backup power sources, primarily to ensure the safety of those centers. If automatic shutdown occurs, the backup power will run out of fuel due to the interruption in diesel supply. As power for fire suppression purposes, it is necessary to ensure a certain number of hours of operation in case of a fire, so it is more appropriate to make manual decisions regarding shutdown.
Automatic shutdown is also possible; for example, it can be set to shut down automatically after a certain period at 270°C. In short, whether it’s manual or automatic operation depends on the conditions on site, and an appropriate decision-making logic can be chosen – automatic operation is an option as well.
