In this test, the maximum detection range in a natural gas environment was 70 meters, while in a brine environment it was 240 meters; its detection performance is on par with that of similar international products. Gas storage facilities are important systems for seasonal peak shaving, emergency gas supply, and maintaining balance between gas supply and demand. Among them, salt cavern gas storage facilities offer advantages such as flexible injection and extraction, high throughput per well, no leakage in gas storage, and a high proportion of usable gas, making them an ideal choice for efficient gas storage and peak shaving. Sonic cavity detection equipment can be used to determine the shape of the cavities in salt cavern gas storage facilities, and it is an essential key device in the construction and operation of such facilities. To meet the production requirements such as the large volume of inspections needed for detecting the shape of gas storage caverns, as well as the high demands for inspection accuracy and reliability, **Pipe Network Group, in collaboration with leading domestic R&D teams, spent over three years overcoming various key technical challenges, including the design of high-temperature, high-pressure ultra-wideband transceiver transducers, multi-frequency broadband linear power transmission, and the control of the stability of devices located inside the wells. As a result, they were able to design and manufacture prototypes of sonar equipment for measuring cavern shapes in salt caverns. Tests were conducted on saltwater-filled caverns as well as caverns containing natural gas under pressure, enabling the acquisition of a complete 3D model of the cavern structures. The performance of this equipment meets the requirements for measuring cavern shapes in salt cavern gas storage facilities. The successful development of this sonar cavity measurement equipment meets the urgent need for high-precision and highly reliable cavity measurement technologies in China’s large-scale, complex gas storage chambers. It provides strong technical support for the construction and operation of salt cavern gas storage facilities, and is of great significance for promoting the high-quality development of China’s gas storage industry as well as enhancing the country’s gas storage capacity.
