First of all, not all radar level gauges require a dielectric constant parameter. Some contactless and single-rope guided wave radars often only have a sensitivity option. Radar level gauges that claim to be able to detect interfaces and double rods often require a dielectric constant, and some level gauges that market themselves on their ability to detect media with low dielectric constants also demand a dielectric constant. The effect of the dielectric constant on radar electromagnetic waves is manifested in two aspects: first, it affects the absorption (reflection) rate of electromagnetic waves by the surface of the medium; second, the wavelength (frequency) of the electromagnetic waves changes as they pass through the medium. For most pure transmission→reflection→reception processes, a dielectric constant is indeed not required. By adjusting the sensitivity as needed, it is possible to detect the desired echo among various echoes and complete the measurement. However, in some cases, to eliminate unwanted echoes and detect the desired ones, it is necessary to significantly increase the computational load of the level gauge; in such situations, adding a dielectric constant parameter makes it easier to achieve a good cost-performance ratio. For example: if there is foam on the liquid surface, the foam surface will be recognized as the liquid surface ; Some other substances may precipitate on the surface of the liquid layer (such as clear water on the surface of mud); due to its thinness, the level gauge will consider the surface of the substance beneath as the liquid level. In certain media, the level gauge may interpret the echo from the bottom of the tank as a liquid level signal. Additionally, in guided-wave radar using dual rods or coaxial probes, level gauges need to determine whether the interaction between the two electrodes occurs above the liquid surface or within the medium. In these cases, increasing the dielectric constant can greatly reduce the amount of computation, and it is sometimes necessary to do so. Therefore, depending on the model, application, and structure, some radar level gauges require a dielectric constant, while others require sensitivity.
