Amidst **rising criteria for award selection and a decrease in the number of awards granted, Sinopec (600028, stock analysis) still received 6 awards this time, including 3 first prizes for scientific and technological progress, 2 second prizes for technical inventions, and 1 second prize for scientific and technological progress. Among them, the “Efficient Exploration and Development of the Fuling Large-Scale Marine Shale Gas Field” project won the First Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress; it was carried out jointly by 19 organizations, including Sinopec’s Exploration Branch, Jianghan Oilfield Branch, the Petroleum Engineering Technology Research Institute, and the Petroleum Exploration and Development Research Institute. Relying on independent innovation, the project established China’s first **-grade shale gas demonstration area, making China the third country after the United States and Canada to fully master the complete set of technologies for shale gas development. This broke the foreign technological monopoly, led to a major breakthrough in China’s shale gas sector, and enabled the country to advance from an initial stage in shale gas exploration and development to a leading position. It provided replicable and applicable experience for such activities in China. At present, the proven geological reserves of the Fuling shale gas field amount to 600.8 billion cubic meters, and a total volume of gas produced so far exceeds 15 billion cubic meters. In 2017 alone, 6.004 billion cubic meters of gas were produced, with daily sales reaching up to 16.7 million cubic meters. This volume is sufficient to meet the gas needs of 33.4 million households, making it an important resource base for the development of the \"Gasified Yangtze River Basin\". It plays a significant role in promoting the adjustment of the energy structure, alleviating the supply pressures in the natural gas market in China’s central and eastern regions, as well as accelerating efforts to reduce emissions and prevent air pollution. “The \"Highly Efficient Methanol-to-Olefins Full Process Technology (S-MTO)\\" won the First Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress; it was developed jointly by Sinopec Shanghai Research Institute of Petrochemical Technology, Engineering Construction Co., Ltd., Zhongyuan Petrochemical Co., Ltd., and Beijing Yanshan Branch. The successful development of this technology has made our country the first in the world to master the full-process MTO technology with independent intellectual property rights. It has enabled the industrialization of the fully domesticated process technologies for producing ethylene and propylene from methanol, providing advanced, comprehensive, and reliable technical support for the development of the coal chemical industry. Moreover, it has opened up a new path for our country to implement its oil substitution strategy. “The project \"Development and Application of Large-Scale Modern Coal Chemical Plant Technologies for Coal-to-Oil Products/Olefins\" won the First Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress. It was led by Shenhua Group Co., Ltd., with the participation of Sinopec Engineering Construction Co., Ltd., Sinopec Luoyang Engineering Co., Ltd., and Sinopec Research Institute of Petroleum Chemistry, among others. This project has overcome a series of world-class technical challenges, with its overall technology reaching an internationally leading level. In addition, the technology for the detailed characterization of intersticial and cavernous oil reservoirs in marine carbonate rocks, numerical simulation, and efficient water injection development methods, developed under the leadership of Sinopec’s Research Institute of Petroleum Exploration and Development, and the technology for the efficient production of chemical raw materials through structure-guided transformation of hydrocarbon molecules, developed by Sinopec’s Fushun Research Institute of Petrochemical Technology, won the **Second Prize for Technical Invention**. The “Deep Delayed Coking Technology for Improving Light Oil Yield”, developed jointly by the Petroleum University and Sinopec Jinling Petrochemical Branch, won the **Second Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress**. According to a responsible official from the **Office for Science and Technology Awards (referred to as the Awards Office), over the past 5 years, the total number of awards in the three categories of Natural Science Awards, Technical Invention Awards, and Scientific and Technological Progress Awards has generally shown a downward trend year by year, remaining below 300 in total. ”In 2017, a cap was introduced on the total number of awards to be given, with around 45 awards in the category of natural sciences and approximately 65 awards in the category of technical inventions. Against such a backdrop, Sinopec still managed to win 6 major awards, which is no easy feat. These outstanding results stem from Sinopec’s consistent adherence to the principle of \"revitalizing the petrochemical industry through innovation,\" its vigorous implementation of an innovation-driven strategy, its focus on the development of its core business, its efforts to improve the scientific research system and innovate in research mechanisms, as well as its commitment to open innovation and the pursuit of original innovation, integrated innovation, and innovation through the introduction, adaptation, and further development of existing technologies. At present, Sinopec has a total of 8 directly affiliated research institutes and 10 branch institutes, forming a scientific and technological innovation system characterized by \"one entity, four platforms, unified planning, and integrated development.\" It has established four major technical platforms for oil and gas exploration and development, petroleum refining, petrochemicals, as well as energy-saving and environmental protection technologies, and has developed increasingly close mechanisms for integrating production, sales, research, and application, as well as industry, academia, and research collaboration. In recent years, China Petrochemical has seen a continuous stream of innovative achievements, with remarkable results in the field of science and technology. By the end of 2017, Sinopec had received a total of 446 awards for technical inventions and scientific and technological progress, including 1 Highest Science and Technology Award, 75 awards for technical inventions, and 370 awards for scientific and technological progress ; A total of 96 patent awards have been received, including 19 gold awards and 77 excellence awards. Sinopec has produced many talented scientists and engineers. In 2017, the results of the biennial election for new academicians were announced; Dai Houliang, the general manager of the group company, was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, while Xie Zaiku, the director of the Sinopec Research Institute, was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. To date, Sinopec has a total of 19 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and 4 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2017, the asteroid with the international designation 210292 was officially named \"Ma Yongsheng Star\" – named after Ma Yongsheng, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and vice president of Sinopec. This is a prestigious, international and permanent honor.
