Meeting on Industrial Application Evaluation of Datang Complete Methanization Catalyst Held Author/Source: ChemChemNet Coal Chemicals Date: 2018-12-22 Clicks: 21 On December 18, the “Meeting on Industrial Application Evaluation of Datang Complete Methanization Catalyst,” organized by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation (hereinafter referred to as “CPPCF”), was held on-site at Inner Mongolia Datang International Kesikteng Coal-to-Natural Gas Co., Ltd. The experts attending this evaluation meeting came from four coal-to-natural gas projects that are already in operation in China, projects for converting coke oven gas into natural gas, as well as related engineering companies and research institutions. The expert group listened to a presentation by Datang International Chemical Technology Research Institute Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Datang Chemical Research Institute”) on the development process of the synth gas complete methanization (SNG) catalysts developed independently, as well as on the operation of the methanization units in the Datang Keqi coal-to-natural gas project, and held detailed discussions. They gained an in-depth understanding of the innovative features, advantages, and industrial performance of Datang Chemical Research Institute’s SNG catalysts, and also inspected the industrial-scale catalyst operation facilities on site. The experts present agreed that the SNG catalyst developed by Datang Chemical Engineering Institute exhibits superior catalytic performance and expected service life compared to imported catalysts of the same period; it meets all the requirements for full domestic substitution of SNG catalysts, and is of great significance for reducing the operating costs of domestic coal-to-natural gas plants as well as for the domestic development of methanation technology. The expert team members inspected the site of the industrial plant to examine key parameters such as the hot spot locations of the SNG catalysts at Datang Chemical Engineering Institute, the temperature of those hot spots, the pressure drop across the catalyst bed, and the quality of the product gas. The Datang Chemical Research Institute has spent a decade working hard, and its diligent efforts have yielded fruitful results. Dagang Chemical Research Institute began the development of SNG catalysts in 2007, progressing from the finalization of catalyst formulations at the pilot scale, to pilot-scale production of 100 kilograms per day, and finally to industrial production at a rate of one ton per day. By utilizing the **\"863\" project it was involved in, research was carried out on the development of a complete process for the complete methanization of syngas; an industrial SNG side-stream unit with a capacity of 3,000 Nm3/day was built at the Lu’an coal-based synthetic oil project site in Shanxi, and catalyst testing over a period of 4,300 hours was conducted in this unit. In December 2014, the self-developed SNG catalyst passed the evaluation of scientific and technological achievements organized by the Petrochemical Federation, with the results reaching an internationally advanced level. The expert group recommended: \"Accelerate the construction of industrial production lines for catalysts used in the complete methanization of syngas, and promptly introduce these catalysts into the production facilities of coal-to-natural gas plants.\" To accelerate the industrial application of SNG catalysts, Datang Chemical Engineering Institute collaborated with Hubei Huihuang Technology Co., Ltd., which has extensive production experience, to carry out the industrial production of such catalysts. At the end of August this year, the industrially produced SNG catalysts were installed in the methanation unit of Datang Keqi’s coal-to-natural gas project, where they operated successfully. A total of 11.5 tons of these catalysts were used, marking the first time that domestically produced SNG catalysts were used in an industrial facility to achieve partial domestic substitution. As of December 18, 2018, the catalyst had been operating stably in the methanation plant for a total of over 100 days, with a maximum load of 107.64% and an average load above 90%. During this operation period, the hot spot on the catalyst remained at 10.76% of the catalyst bed layer, showing no downward movement. The partial domestic substitution of SNG catalysts, achieved by Datang Chemical Engineering Institute for the first time in China, brings significant economic and social benefits. It is understood that domestic coal-to-natural gas projects use foreign methanation catalysts, which result in long procurement cycles and high operating costs, placing a heavy burden on enterprises. Promoting the domestic substitution of SNG catalysts helps domestic coal-to-SYN gas producers reduce their reliance on foreign catalysts, lower catalyst procurement costs, and ensure the long-term stable operation of their facilities. Mastering the core catalyst technologies supports the national substitution of key technologies, equipment, and catalysts in the coal chemical industry, which is highly encouraged, thereby contributing to the advancement of energy security strategies. The Datang Chemical Research Institute has developed a synthesis gas complete methanization process technology with a capacity of 4 million Nm3/day, based on SNG catalysts; the successful partial replacement of imported SNG catalysts with domestic ones will further accelerate the industrial application of this SNG process technology.
