Shandong Launches Coal Underground Gasification Project Author/Source: China Chemical Industry News Date: 2019-02-18 Clicks: 27 The 2×600,000-kilowatt coal underground gasification project at Luxi Mine in Zaozhuang has officially commenced construction. This is the first large-scale underground coal gasification project in Shandong Province. Industry experts say that underground coal gasification technology offers good economic and environmental benefits. Shifting from \"physical coal mining\" to \"chemical coal mining\" will improve the utilization rate and efficiency of coal resources, and it represents an important direction for research and development in clean coal technology in China. Coal in-situ gasification technology involves the controlled combustion and gasification of coal that is located underground. Through thermal and chemical processes applied to the coal, usable gaseous energy is generated; the useful components are extracted while waste materials such as coal gangue and carbon dioxide remain underground. This approach reduces carbon emissions and prevents safety accidents, At the same time enabling the production of chemical products such as hydrogen, methane, and methanol. Furthermore, depending on the composition of the gas and the application conditions, underground gasification gas can be used to produce pure hydrogen, as well as as a raw material gas for the chemical industry and an industrial fuel gas. In particular, after underground gasification, combustible hydrogen-rich gas is produced; through various purification and separation processes on the surface, this gas can be separated into compressed hydrogen and pure carbon dioxide. Hydrogen can be used as an energy source to generate power in fuel cells, while carbon dioxide can be captured and stored underground.
