Xinjiang Jiannan Mining’s Project for Pyrolysis and Classification of Raw Coal / Author/Source: Huahua Net Coal Chemicals / Date: 2020-07-26 / Clicks: 100. Finding Opportunities in Challenges to Achieve a Remarkable Transformation. Naomaohu Town in Yiwu County is the area with the highest coal reserves in Hami City. The coal produced here features \"three highs and two lows\": high volatility, high tar yield, and high calorific value, along with low sulfur and low ash content; this type of coal is known as oil-rich coal. Oil-rich coal is an excellent raw material for coal chemical industries. Its unique properties and quality make it highly suitable for dry distillation and pyrolysis processes aimed at improving its quality, thereby enabling clean and efficient production as well as comprehensive utilization within the field of advanced coal processing. In 2016, Xinjiang Jianna Mining Co., Ltd. invested in building the Xingsheng open-pit coal mine in Yiwu County. The mine’s resource reserves amount to 573 million tons, with a production capacity of 17 million tons per year. Faced with increasingly strict environmental regulations and modest profit margins, Jiangna Mining has been seeking a path of green development that suits its circumstances. From January to June 2019, Hong Lun, the general manager of Jiangna Mining, led technical staff to engage in technical exchanges, learning, and discussions with nearly 20 domestic firms specializing in the design and consultation for projects related to the pyrolysis and upgrading of raw coal, as well as with various research institutions. These efforts were aimed at developing an environment-friendly project that integrates principles of circular economy and comprehensive utilization of resources and energy. In the end, Jiangna Mining decided to launch a project for the pyrolysis and classification of raw coal, aiming to convert a single type of coal into five new products: waste gas for power generation, diesel, ethylene glycol, activated carbon capable of absorbing impurities, and cleaner-burning refined coal. Product upgrade and diversification of business operations: In March 2019, the first \"product\" under Jianna Mining’s \"one transformed into five\" strategy – the waste gas power generation project – was officially connected to the power grid and began generating electricity. On the day of grid-connected power generation, Hong Lun was leading technical staff to attend the expert review meeting for the 5.5 million-ton raw coal pyrolysis and grading project funded by the company; the project passed the expert evaluation successfully. After achieving the transformation from one type to five, rich-coal transformed from a mere \"black lump\" into a highly sought-after resource. The expansion of the industrial chain has accelerated the development of Jianna Mining, which has now grown into a comprehensive energy company that engages in coal mining, sales, power generation, and the production and supply of new coal-based chemical materials. “At the current coal prices, 5.5 million tons of high-oil-content coal can generate revenues of around 500 million yuan; with it being converted into 5 different products, the revenue can reach 4 billion yuan. ”Li Wei said. Li Wei is very confident about the future, and this confidence is backed by the company’s financial performance: from January to April this year, Jiangna Mining achieved total operating revenues of 560 million yuan. This success was made possible by the efforts across the entire industrial chain; just the waste gas power generation project alone generated 129,000 megawatt-hours of electricity during that period, resulting in sales revenue of 31.6284 million yuan. It is precisely because of these promising prospects that Jiangna Mining, focusing on the industrial chain of \"coal – carbon – oil – gas – electricity – heat – chemicals,\" is actively working to develop a modern coal chemical industry base. The company plans to invest over 8.5 billion yuan in projects related to improving the quality of coal, purifying waste gas to produce hydrogen, deeply processing coal tar to manufacture petroleum products, producing liquefied natural gas, and utilizing waste gas to create coal chemical products such as methanol and ethylene glycol. It is also making significant efforts to further exploit coal deposits rich in oil. The integrated project for the clean, efficient, and advanced processing of 5.5 million tons of coal per year began operations at the end of March this year. It is a circular industry project that combines coal pyrolysis, waste gas power generation, and coal tar hydrogenation processes, and it focuses on the deep-processing of raw coal to produce coal, carbon, electricity, oil, and gas in a circular manner. The project is located at the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains, within the industrial park in Naomaohu Town, Yiwu County, Hami City, Xinjiang. It will be constructed in three phases: Phase 1 will involve the construction of a new low-rank coal pyrolysis unit with an annual capacity of 5 million tons, a clean coal production unit with an annual capacity of 1 million tons, a coal tar hydrogenation unit with an annual capacity of 500,000 tons (including a naphtha reforming unit with an annual capacity of 200,000 tons), as well as various utility facilities ; Phase 2 construction of a 200,000 tons/year green methanol plant using waste gas, a 100,000 tons/year formaldehyde dimethyl acetal plant, an LNG plant producing 80,000 tons/year as a by-product of waste gas purification, and utility facilities ; Phase 3: Construction of a 200,000 tons/year green ethylene glycol plant using waste gas, along with the necessary utility systems.
