Successful Testing of Shaanxi Blower’s Ultra-Large Axial Flow Compressor Unit Author/Source: Shaanxi Petrochemical News Network Date: 2020-09-02 Clicks: 2 On September 1, reporters learned from Shaanxi Blower (Group) Co., Ltd. that the company’s self-developed AV140 axial flow compressor unit, which possesses independent intellectual property rights and is the largest of its kind in the world, was successfully tested at the company’s Lintong production facility, with all performance indicators reaching international advanced levels. Wang Yitian, an expert entitled to a special allowance from the State Council and the technical director of Shaanxi Gear Axial Flow Compressors, told reporters that this compressor unit is an ultra-large axial flow compressor unit with an operating air volume of 20,000 to 25,000 cubic meters per minute and a pressure ratio of 8 to 9 – all of which represent the highest values in the global industrial axial flow compressor sector. The total length of this unit is 11.5 meters, its width is 5.7 meters, and its height is 4.5 meters; its total weight exceeds 400 tons. The core component, the hollow rotor, is nearly 11 meters in length and weighs almost 70 tons, with an inner diameter of 1.4 meters. It is reported that the AV140 super-large axial flow compressor unit, which was successfully tested at Shaanxi Gas Turbine, features newly designed and high-efficiency blade shapes as well as a hollow rotor, ensuring more stable operation and higher energy efficiency for the entire unit. It will be used in the exhaust system of China’s aeroengine high-altitude test facilities. It is understood that for a long time, the technology for large axial flow compressors used in aerospace high-altitude test benches and continuous transonic wind tunnels has been monopolized by foreign countries. Western developed nations not only impose strict technical restrictions on China but also prohibit the export of such products. Since 1999, Shaanxi Gear Axial Flow Compressor’s specialized R&D team has been working on the development of continuous transonic wind tunnels in China, as well as super-large axial flow compressor units for use in the aerospace industry. They have successfully overcome a series of technical challenges, including high-performance optimization design, the development of large hollow shafts, quality control for large welded components, and various parallel and series control techniques for multiple compressors. This has broken foreign monopolies on this technology and filled a gap in China’s technical capabilities in this field. Meanwhile, Shaanxi Blower’s similar large-scale axial flow compressor units have been applied in China in fields such as aerospace continuous transonic wind tunnel tests, extremely large metallurgical blast furnaces, petrochemical catalytic cracking, large-scale air separation, pharmaceutical manufacturing, nitric acid production, sulfuric acid production, and long-distance gas transmission. To promote the localization of large-scale high-end equipment, in recent years Shangdu has also established an experimental research platform for testing the performance of the basic stages of axial flow compressors, featuring high efficiency, high performance, and high reliability. By innovating research methods and verifying the results of CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) fluid simulations, this platform provides strong support for the improvement of technology in domestic large-scale high-end equipment. “In line with its **strategic plans**, Shaanxi Gas Turbine is working together with Xi’an Jiaotong University to overcome the key technical challenges related to scaled-down compressors for certain \"two-machine projects\" (engines and gas turbines). They are also developing continuous supersonic wind tunnel compressors, so as to enable Chinese equipment to stand tall on the world stage. ”Wang Yitian revealed. As the largest manufacturer and service provider of axial flow compressors and energy recovery power generation systems for industrial processes, SHANGU integrates global resources to establish a range of innovation hubs and international resource platforms for technological advancement, including the SHANGU Research Institute, academician and expert workstations, postdoctoral research stations, the SHANGU European R&D Center, the SHANGU Brno R&D Center, and the Distributed Energy Technology and Equipment Innovation Center. These initiatives help to build a global R&D and innovation system, enabling SHANGU to lead the world in technology related to energy conversion.
