Recently, the 2018 China Petrochemical Science and Technology Awards were announced, and the “200,000 tons per year synthetic gas-based ethylene glycol production technology” developed by Hubei Fertilizer Company in collaboration with the Shanghai Research Institute of Petrochemistry, Shanghai Engineering Corporation, and other organizations, was awarded the first prize for scientific and technological progress. Hubei Fertilizer’s 200,000 tons per year demonstration project for producing ethylene glycol from syngas utilizes the excess syngas generated by Shell’s powder coal gasification unit, with ethylene glycol being manufactured using technology independently developed by Sinopec. This project is in line with China’s energy structure, which is characterized by a shortage of oil and gas but an abundance of coal. It falls under the category of projects that are encouraged for development, and it is also part of Sinopec’s “Ten Dragon” scientific and technological innovation program. The project was successfully commissioned in March 2014, and it reached full operational capacity by December 2017. Currently, the product is widely used in downstream polyester production. This proprietary technology features large scale, high product quality, safety and reliability, as well as comprehensive utilization of thermal energy. Possesses the complete process technology for producing ethylene glycol from syngas, and has expertise in catalyst development and production techniques ; The product meets **premium quality standards**; polyester is produced on an industrial scale using 100% coal-based ethylene glycol, and its quality satisfies the requirements for polyester production ; The process flow, control strategies, and equipment selection are reasonable; in addition, appropriate energy grading and heat coupling technologies are employed to make comprehensive use of thermal energy. This lays a foundation for Hubei Fertilizer to adjust its product portfolio, adopt a circular economy approach, and reduce energy consumption and emissions. It also makes positive contributions to Sinopec’s efforts to optimize its raw material structure, develop the coal chemical industry, diversify chemical raw materials, and advance the strategy of replacing petroleum with coal-based products.
