As of September 17, the newly installed Qilishan biochemical sludge dewatering system in Baling Petrochemical’s water treatment department had been operating optimally and stably for a full month. Thus, the coal chemical wastewater treatment renovation project, which took over 9 months to complete, is now fully operational. The sludge dewatering rate is 83%, well within the target limit of 85%. The chemical oxygen demand of the water discharged from the Qilishan biochemical treatment facility is less than 50 milligrams per liter, while the total nitrogen content is below (or equal to) 5 milligrams per liter, and the total phosphorus content is below (or equal to) 0.5 milligrams per liter – meeting the special emission standards set by Hunan Province ahead of schedule. The Qili Biochemical Plant in the Water Treatment Department of Baling Petrochemical is primarily responsible for treating the wastewater generated by the company’s coal chemical division. It has been in operation for 14 years; its designed capacity is low, and therefore it is unable to handle the increased wastewater volume resulting from the expansion and upgrades of the upstream facilities. At the same time, due to the lack of phosphorus and nitrogen removal functions in the biochemical system originally designed and built for the facility, the removal efficiency is poor, creating a bottleneck in environmental protection efforts. In response to this, and following approval from headquarters, Baling Petrochemical has launched a project to upgrade the treatment of fertilizer wastewater in its Water Treatment Department.
