Record of the Commissioning of Zhongtai Coal Coking’s 200,000 tons/year Methanol Production Project from Coke Gas / Author/Source: Henan Energy Xinjiang Company / Date: 2021-05-10 / Views: 21 On May 6, at the site of Zhongtai Coal Coking’s 200,000 tons/year methanol production project, there was a continuous stream of vehicles coming to purchase methanol. Since April, the company’s methanol plant has been operating at full capacity, with an average daily production of 600 tons. As one of the key projects under the autonomous region’s 13th Five-Year Plan, and being the only methanol production facility in southern Xinjiang that uses coke oven gas as raw material, this project has received significant attention from local authorities as well as the two-level corporate structure. The commissioning of this project is of great significance; it represents the result of the efforts and hard work of many people over the years. As designed, the methanol project will be able to produce 200,000 tons of methanol per year, consuming 432 million cubic meters of excess gas from coke ovens, thereby reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 39,500 tons. This approach not only helps to address the environmental problems caused by the release of coke oven gas but also creates new sources of profit for the company. It is very important for the group company, Xinjiang Company, and Zhongtai Coal Coking to have this project completed and put into operation as soon as possible. On November 23, 2020, the methanol project officially began using coke oven gas, with the conversion workshop serving as the first unit to operate under these conditions. In December, winter in Xinjiang is particularly harsh, with temperatures dropping below minus 20 degrees. Since the fuel gas contains moisture, it is very easy for the control valves to freeze and become clogged in such cold weather, thereby increasing the difficulties associated with starting up the facility. To ensure the proper operation of key equipment such as steam boilers, during the commissioning phase, the staff on duty stayed at the site wearing thick cotton coats, continuously using steam pipes to purge each control valve that might be at risk of freezing and blockage. Technicians carried out a thorough inspection of the heat tracing pipes, external drainage pipes, etc., checking temperatures and vibrations by hand and listening for any changes in sound, not overlooking any detail. On March 3, the methanol project was successfully commissioned with its initial feed, producing qualified methanol. On April 9, the first sale of methanol products was made, and currently these products are being sold in places such as Qinghai and Sichuan. (Wang Hongjie, Wan Binpeng)
