The coal-to-hydrogen plant at the Zhenhai facility, which utilizes Sinopec’s SE water-coal slurry gasification technology, was completed ahead of schedule. Author/Source: Gasification World Date: June 29, 2021 Clicks: 2 On June 28, 2021, the coal-to-hydrogen plant and the power center at the Zhenhai facility, which were under EPC contract by Sinopec Ningbo Engineering Company, were completed two days earlier than scheduled. This is another important completion milestone for the installation, following the completion of the project-based water condensation system at the Zhenhai base. The coal coke hydrogen production plant and the power center began construction on March 18, 2020. The second phase of Zhenhai Refining & Chemical’s coal-coke hydrogen production project uses 3 2,500-ton SE water-coal (coke) slurry gasifiers. The new coal-coke hydrogen production project at Zhenhai Base utilizes Sinopec’s SE water-coal slurry gasification technology; once operational, it will be capable of producing 160,000 standard cubic meters per hour of hydrogen and 126,000 standard cubic meters per hour of fuel gas. Project Overview: The first phase of Zhenhai Refining & Chemical’s coal-coking hydrogen production facility uses 3 SE water-coal slurry gasifiers with a capacity of 1,000 tons of coal per day. On January 30, 2019, the entire process of the coal-coke hydrogen production unit was operational. This is the first industrial application of SE water-coal (coke) slurry gasification. Based on its approval of the first-phase hydrogen production facility, Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Co., Ltd. signed a contract for the second-phase SE water-coal (coke) slurry gasification in September 2019. The Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Co., Ltd. coal coke hydrogen production project is a key scientific and technological initiative of Sinopec, with an approved investment of 1.5 billion yuan; it is under the general contract of Sinopec Ningbo Engineering Company. The core component of the unit, the water-coal slurry gasification unit, utilizes a technology developed through collaboration between Sinopec and East China University of Science and Technology, marking the first industrial application of this technology in China. Using water-coal slurry as raw material, this device can produce 120,000 cubic meters of hydrogen per hour, thereby further enhancing the company’s capacity for producing clean fuels. At present, the hydrogen produced by the device has a purity of 98.27%, and all process and environmental protection parameters meet the design requirements. The successful commissioning of the facility not only plays a crucial role in helping Zhenhai Refining & Chemical further enhance its production capacity of cleaner oil products and improve the company’s overall competitiveness; under the new context of **actively promoting the application of hydrogen as a new energy source**, it also holds great significance for exploring the clean utilization of coal resources.
