Coal gasification by-products become powerful tools for improving efficiency! Author/Source: Gasification World Date: 2021-09-10 Clicks: 18 Fly ash from gasifiers is a by-product of Shell’s powder coal gasification plants and is often used as an additive in cement. Due to its small particle size and poor flowability, it was neglected for a long time. Since the beginning of this year, Hubei Fertilizer has made the sale of gasification ash a key focus for its annual efforts. By seizing the opportunity presented by the growing demand for this product as an additive in high-end building materials, and by introducing a bidding system in which sales shares are allocated to the highest bidders, it has published bidding information through platforms such as Petrochemical E-Trade and customer WeChat groups, thereby encouraging customers to participate in the bidding process. As a result, the selling price has been 806% higher than the original price, generating annual profits of 3.99 million yuan – turning this by-product from one that was ignored into one that is highly sought after in bidding competitions. To ensure that the environment is not polluted during the transportation of fly ash, they require customers to arrange dedicated enclosed tank trucks for pickup, to wash the truck bodies and tires before departure, and to drive along designated routes at specified speeds. The coarse slag, for which bidding takes place on the same day as the gasification ash, is another by-product of the coal gasification plant; it contains a certain amount of residual carbon and calorific value, and is mainly used for brick manufacturing and coal blending. Since the beginning of this year, coal prices have risen sharply and remained high, increasing the appeal of coarse slag to customers. Hubei Fertilizer has tapped into market potential by changing the bidding cycle from once a year to once per quarter, with bids being linked to coal prices. This measure alleviates customers’ concerns regarding future coal price trends and boosts their willingness to place orders. The number of customers participating in the bidding doubled compared to the same period last year, and bidding prices increased significantly, resulting in an efficiency gain of 1.74 million yuan per quarter.
