Recently, the utility model patent titled “A device for producing asphalt using medium- and low-temperature coal tar”, applied for by Shenmu Coal Chemical Tianyuan Company based on this technology, was approved by the Intellectual Property Office. The aforementioned licensed patents can simplify the process for producing needle coke. They address issues such as the high content of resins and asphaltenes in high-temperature coal tar pitch products, which leads to coking at high temperatures and high viscosity at low temperatures; these factors make it difficult to use such products as raw materials for needle coke production, and they also result in low added value of the final products. Additionally, when medium- and low-temperature coal tar is used to produce refined asphalt products, it is possible to obtain crude gasoline, light distillates, heavy distillates, binder asphalt, and other products, thereby enabling efficient utilization of medium- and low-temperature coal tar, increasing the added value of its products, and opening up new processes for using this type of coal tar in the production of refined asphalt. In order to significantly increase the added value of its products and pursue a path in high-end, sophisticated chemical manufacturing, Tianyuan Company began research and development on the production of carbon materials from low-temperature coal tar in 2017 ; In 2019, a production facility for producing carbon materials from medium- and low-temperature coal tar with an annual capacity of 120,000 tons was built ; In 2021, Tianyuan Company used mixed solvent extraction to remove impurities from the raw materials, and its industrial facilities produced high-quality needle coke feedstock (refined pitch) whose parameters exceeded the design values. This approach paved the way for an innovative development strategy suitable for producing high-quality needle coke and anode materials from medium- and low-temperature coal tar. It is understood that in 2020, Tianyuan Company’s research and development project on producing carbon materials from 120,000 tons per year of medium- and low-temperature coal tar was included in both the Shaanxi Provincial Program for Guiding Regional Innovation Capabilities and the Yulin Municipal Science and Technology Program. The project received a total of 620,000 yuan in support funds.
