Xi’an Jiaotong University was awarded the contract for the research on peak-shaving technology using coal-fired units combined with molten salt heat storage, as part of a procurement process conducted by the R&D institute of Datang Environment Company. September 30, 2025 – On September 29, Datang Environmental Protection Technology Research Institute announced the results of the bidding process for this research project; Xi’an Jiaotong University was the supplier selected. As an important hub for higher education and scientific research innovation in China, Xi’an Jiaotong University boasts profound academic expertise and outstanding innovation capabilities in key fields such as engineering thermophysics, materials science, and energy engineering. In recent years, Xi’an Jiaotong University has achieved many breakthroughs in the research, development, and application of technologies such as photothermal power generation, thermal energy storage, thermochemistry, and photothermal hydrogen production, making significant contributions to the high-quality development of China’s new energy industry. Xi’an Jiaotong University’s research in the field of peak-shaving using coal-fired units combined with molten salt thermal storage focuses on the complementary use of multiple energy sources and efficient energy utilization. Its main goal is to enhance the grid’s capacity for peak-shaving and to promote the use of renewable energy by integrating molten salt thermal storage systems with coal-fired power generators. This technology relies primarily on the high-temperature heat storage properties of molten salts to store excess thermal energy during low-load periods in coal-fired power plants, and to release this energy during peak periods to meet electricity generation demands, thereby significantly improving the operational flexibility of the plants. Breakthrough progress has been made in the application demonstration of coal-fired unit coupling with molten salt thermal storage for peak shaving. Leveraging the platform of the **Key Laboratory of Multiphase Flow**, the team established China’s first molten salt-coal coupled peak-shaving demonstration project on a 300MW subcritical coal-fired unit, achieving seamless integration of the molten salt heat storage system with the boiler’s exhaust flue.
