Under conditions of power rationing, among coal-based hydrogen production, natural gas-based hydrogen production, hydrogen derived from industrial by-products, and water electrolysis, which one is the current mainstream method?
This requires comparing the energy consumption of various processes.
Currently, coal-based hydrogen production is the mainstream approach, and through blending technologies, it is possible to utilize the problematic petroleum coke from refineries. Hydrogen production from natural gas is **restricted**; only a few areas rich in natural gas (such as Hainan, Southern Xinjiang, and the Sichuan Basin) are capable of doing so. Industrial by-product hydrogen can be shared among local industrial parks with oil refineries, but its large-scale application is limited. For hydrogen production through water electrolysis, industrial demonstration units already exist, but large-scale industrial application still requires breakthroughs in technology and funding.
Wind and photovoltaic power generation, as well as hydrogen production through water electrolysis, will be the main methods for obtaining hydrogen in the future.
It doesn’t matter whether it’s mainstream or not; the technology that is suitable for a particular company, based on factors such as the by-product gas available and the scale of hydrogen production, is the best one.
