Recently, the kick-off meeting for the major consulting and research project of the Fujian Research Institute for Engineering Science and Technology Development, titled “Strategic Study on Diversified Storage, Transportation, and End-Use of Hydrogen in Fujian Province – Transformative Ammonia-Based Hydrogen Storage Technologies and ‘Ammonia-Hydrogen’ Conversion Applications,” was held in Fuzhou. Wu Ruijian, deputy director of the Fujian Research Institute, said that he hopes that through this project focused on the entire chain of ammonia-based hydrogen storage, the challenges related to storage, transportation, hydrogen production, and application can be overcome, thereby establishing a new system for hydrogen storage and transportation and providing a development path for Fujian’s green hydrogen industry. Xu Zuxin, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and professor at Tongji University, pointed out that the development of clean energy in Fujian is of great significance for regional economic transformation and as a model for application across the country. The team will focus on the development pathways for green ammonia synthesis and storage and transportation technologies, deepen multi-party cooperation, and promote the efficient implementation of these projects. Zhang Jiujun, a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and professor at Fuzhou University, emphasized that the hydrogen energy industry has entered a critical phase of industrialization; breakthroughs are still needed in hydrogen storage and green hydrogen technologies. Meanwhile, green ammonia, as an important medium for the long-distance storage and transportation of hydrogen as well as in the shipbuilding sector, holds strategic significance for the development of the hydrogen energy industry in Fujian and across the country. It is understood that this project is a major consulting project of the Fujian Research Institute in 2025. It is led by a team headed by Wu Minghong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and president of Fuzhou University. Five academicians—Xu Zuxin, Pan Delu, Wu Fengchang, Tu Shandong, and Chen Wenxing—along with 14 other experts are also involved. By examining the current state of Fujian Province’s ammonia-based hydrogen storage industry, the project aims to explore technical pathways for the synthesis, storage, and transportation of green ammonia, evaluate relevant technological capabilities, and analyze exemplary cases. Ultimately, it seeks to propose development strategies for the entire value chain encompassing green hydrogen production, large-scale synthesis of green ammonia, and its storage and transportation.
