When studying air separation, I came across some papers stating that when water quality is good, regular packing can be used in water cooling towers to minimize the water temperature as much as possible; What kind of water quality is meant here? Has anyone conducted a comparative analysis between random-packed fillers and structured fillers in water cooling towers? Please explain in detail.

Perhaps two issues need to be considered: one is the requirement for high flow rates with a small tower diameter; Second are the physical and chemical impurities in water. Crystallization of chemical impurities poses the greatest hazard. It is also limited by the diameter of the tower (pressure vessel). The factors mentioned above are the elements that contribute to air resistance. Although structured and bulk packing materials have high heat exchange efficiency, they are prone to clogging. It is likely this reason that leads to the bulk use of Pall ring methods. This is my personal understanding for reference only.
