In some distillation towers, thermometers are installed on certain trays for operators to view. But how can an operator understand the meaning and purpose of their placement there? It seems clear from the PID, but I feel extremely confused

A distillation column typically has three temperature measurement points: upper, middle, and lower. It is necessary to monitor the temperatures at these three points during operation. The temperatures at these points are related to the concentration of the material being distilled; by knowing the temperatures, one can determine the concentration of the material, and thus assess whether the column is operating properly.
Operators can ask technicians about the underlying principles of process control.
Just train the operators.
Work in the chemical industry for a few more years, do the internal operations, and you’ll naturally understand it; as an external operator, it’s about being familiar with the processes and techniques. Don’t feel confused; you feel that way because you haven’t read enough books!
