API 6.3.1: “The maximum discharge pressure shall be the maximum suction pressure plus the maximum pressure difference that can be generated by the impeller operating under the pump’s rated speed and at the specified standard relative density.” What does “maximum pressure difference” mean in this sentence, and how is it generated?
It means that the pump is capable of achieving a maximum head. For example, if the pressure at the pump’s inlet is 10 bar and the maximum discharge pressure of the pump is 30 bar, then the maximum pressure difference across the pump is 20 bar. In other words, the pump’s head of 200 meters is a fixed value. The maximum discharge pressure is a relative value, relative to the inlet. For example, if a person is 1.7 meters tall and stands on a platform that is 1 meter high, their height relative to the ground is 2.7 meters; if they stand on a platform that is 2 meters high, their height relative to the ground is 3.7 meters
