The so-called asymmetric bellows have different radii of curvature at the trough (inner edge) and the crest (outer edge). The peak is greater than the trough. Under the action of medium pressure, it is forced to deform toward the low-pressure side; during operation, its cross-sectional shape tends to be symmetrical and the stress tends to be uniform (Figure 44). At the same time, thanks to the use of a bellows with a special structure, the weld length is **reduced**. According to foreign sources, there is a 1¾-inch T15WTO type seal with a total weld length of over 4000 mm. In contrast, for asymmetric bellows seals of the same size, the weld length is only 87 mm, which **improves the reliability of the seal**; the sealing capacity increases by 30%, and the elasticity of the bellows improves by 40%. Asymmetric bellows have been introduced to the market abroad; they represent a very promising type of mechanical seal using metal bellows.
