On October 11, BASF announced its plan to invest in building a new pentaerythritol plant of world-class scale at its integrated facility in Zhanjiang, China, with an annual production capacity of 80,000 tons. The new facility is expected to come online in the fourth quarter of 2025, at which time BASF’s global annual production capacity for neopentyl glycol will increase from 255,000 tons to 335,000 tons. Currently, BASF has neopentyl glycol production facilities in Ludwigshafen, Germany, Freeport, Texas, the United States, as well as in Nanjing and Jilin in China. Neopentyl glycol is an intermediate with high chemical and thermal stability, primarily used in the production of powder coating resins. “Investing in a neopentyl glycol plant at the Zhanjiang integrated facility will enable us to meet the growing demands of our Asian customers, particularly in the field of powder coatings in China. ”Hua Siliang, Senior Vice President of BASF’s Intermediates Business Unit in Asia-Pacific, said that by leveraging BASF’s unique integrated model to create synergies and combining it with cutting-edge technologies, this investment will enhance competitive advantages in China, the world’s largest chemical market.
Neopentyl glycol products have attracted attention in China for at least thirty years, and foreign technologies are still being used for their production, which indicates that China’s related technologies have not yet reached the world’s leading level and have not even managed to establish a foothold; the Chinese people still need to work harder.
