Agreement Signed for 300,000-tonne Project on Carbon Dioxide-Based Polycarbonate Diol 2025-04-30 On April 21, Sun Yat-sen University and Zhuhai Zhongguan Petrochemical Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Zhuhai Zhongguan”) held a signing ceremony at Sun Yat-sen University for the “Project on the Commercialization of Technologies for Synthesizing Carbon Dioxide-Based Polycarbonate Diol”. Under the agreement, Sun Yat-sen University licenses Zhuhai Zhongguan the relevant patent technologies for the synthesis of carbon dioxide-based polycarbonate diols. The two parties will work together to develop industrial-scale technologies for this synthesis, with the goal of establishing an industrial production line in Zhuhai Zhongguan capable of producing 300,000 tons per year. In his speech, Professor Liu Fei, Dean of the Institute of Science at Sun Yat-sen University, noted that this collaborative research on the synthesis of carbon dioxide-based polycarbonate diols represents an important step in advancing China’s industrial technologies related to carbon neutrality to international leadership levels. Sun Yat-sen University will work together with Zhuhai Zhongguan to create an ecosystem featuring close integration of industry, academia, research, and application, thereby accelerating the large-scale industrial use of this technology and helping to develop a Chinese approach to green chemistry. Wang Yadong, chairman of Zhuhai Zhongguan, said that the company will make full use of its market advantages and innovation capabilities in manufacturing processes, work together with academic and research institutions, achieve deep integration among industry, academia, and research, accelerate the implementation of technologies for synthesizing carbon dioxide-based polycarbonate diols, and swiftly develop new forms of productive capacity. Professor Ouyang Gangfeng, Dean of the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology at Sun Yat-sen University, said that the school will provide strong support for the joint industrial technology research efforts related to this project, offering comprehensive support services. Professor Meng Yuezhong from the college noted that this project is a valuable achievement resulting from the team’s long-term efforts, innovative thinking, and hard work in research and development. The practical application of the technology for synthesizing carbon dioxide-based polycarbonate diols will enable companies to successfully transition into the fields of fine chemicals and advanced materials. At the same time, the implementation of this technology is also a concrete measure taken by Sun Yat-sen University to support the innovation and development of local enterprises as well as local economic construction. Carbon dioxide-based polycarbonate diol is a completely new and important low-molecular-weight diol material. Among them, the carbon dioxide consumption per ton of carbon dioxide-based polycarbonate diol is close to 50%,; therefore, the production cost of the product is extremely low. Carbon dioxide-based polycarbonate diols are important raw materials for synthesizing polyurethanes. Compared to polyether diols and polyester diols, polyurethane materials synthesized using polycarbonate diols exhibit excellent weather resistance and mechanical properties. Carbon dioxide-based polycarbonate diols have a wide range of applications in fields such as elastomers, coatings, adhesives, and paving materials.
On December 2, 2020, Lianchuang Co., Ltd. issued a announcement regarding its subsidiary’s signing of a Technology Development (Cooperation) Contract with Sun Yat-sen University. Under the agreement, Shandong Lianxin Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Shandong Lianchuang Industrial Development Group Co., Ltd., signed a Technology Development (Cooperation) Contract with Sun Yat-sen University. The two parties will work together to develop synthesis technologies for carbon dioxide-based biodegradable copolymers, including the industrial development of carbon dioxide-based biodegradable plastics, as well as the industrial development of low-molecular-weight carbon dioxide-based polycarbonate polyols and related industrial projects. Main contents of the \"Technology Development (Cooperation) Contract\": Party A: Shandong Lianxin Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd.; Party B: Sun Yat-sen University. The parties to this contract have agreed, through equal consultation and on the basis of genuinely and fully expressing their respective intentions, to jointly engage in the research and development of technologies for synthesizing series of biodegradable copolymers based on carbon dioxide, including the industrial development of carbon dioxide-based biodegradable plastics, as well as the industrial development of low-molecular-weight carbon dioxide-based polycarbonate diols and polyols. All parties shall abide by the terms of this agreement.
