I am a junior mechanic. I wonder whether grease should be applied to the rotor of a gas fan after maintenance and repair, as a measure to prevent corrosion. The rotor is made of stainless steel; in the past, it was required to apply grease there. But now, problems arise every time the fan is tried to be started, preventing it from operating. So the managers first think that the application of grease during maintenance might have disrupted the fan’s dynamic balance… As a junior mechanic, I don’t know what to say; I’m seeking advice from everyone here.
It’s not necessary; just carry out regular turning and maintenance in accordance with the procedures
It’s the same in our factory as well: every time a spare unit is used, its rotor doesn’t work properly, and it’s necessary to take it out for dynamic balancing before switching to it. Normally, stainless steel shouldn’t rust, but since ours is made of iron, we have to apply butter to it after each cleaning.
Here, every time a machine needs to be overhauled, it’s a nightmare. Out of two attempts at overhaul, one fails. They say it’s because the various parameters of my equipment aren’t adjusted properly, which is why such problems haven’t occurred before. I’ve been working in this field for over ten years; initially, the rotors were made of iron, so oil was applied to them. Although the rotors are now made of steel, that habit still remains. I’ve only had the rotors balanced a couple of times in those ten years. But this year, just hearing that an overhaul was needed made my heart race. It’s obvious that there were mistakes during the operation process – the machine didn’t stay within the acceptable vibration range. Yet they insist it’s due to poor balancing, the use of inappropriate oil, or a dirty machine body, and so on. In any case, it’s not related to the operation itself. It’s really exhausting to think about it
