The causes of mechanical seal leakage generally include incorrect selection of the seal, inappropriate material selection for certain components of the seal, improper installation, improper use, and inadequate maintenance. Regarding the frequent leaks mentioned upstairs, assuming that there are no issues with the equipment, it’s necessary to look into problems related to the manufacturing process; based on experience, it’s usually the issues in the manufacturing procedures that cause such problems. First of all, it is necessary to ensure the quality of the sealing water; we use high-pressure boiler water for this purpose. Secondly, the pressure of the sealing water must be higher than that of the working medium, and it needs to remain stable. In the past, we encountered situations where the pressure of the sealing water was too low – it could hold up for a short period of time, but over time the mechanical seal would dry out and leakage would occur easily. Another thing is that the sealing water must be supplied before starting the turntable; otherwise, impurities in the form of dark liquid can easily enter the sealing chamber. Once the pump starts, leaks can occur quite easily. I have seen this happen firsthand – after the pump started, water would leak out like a fountain. One last point: the temperature of the sealing water must not be too high. Here, it’s around 50°C. If the water temperature is too high, it won’t be able to cool the mechanical seal, and it may even vaporize, causing damage to the seal. I have seen such mistakes made on-site in the past – when sealing water wasn’t used, the mechanical seal was extremely hot to the touch.
