What is the purpose of the pipeline that connects the top of the liquid chlorine shielded pump to the gas phase of the liquid chlorine storage tank?
It should be the pump’s balance line. When transporting liquids whose saturated vapor pressure at room temperature is higher than atmospheric pressure or that are in the bubble point state, a balance line is installed to prevent the gases carried by the fluid from entering the pump and causing cavitation; this line allows the gases to return to the gas phase area of the container
I asked the technician today, and he said liquid chlorine is also used, for cooling the pump; I’m not sure which one is correct
The balance line is usually installed on the inlet pipe of the pump (near the pump inlet); I’ve never seen it installed on the pump itself. However, I’ve never encountered such a cooling method either
In counter-circulation shielded pumps, the material at the inlet and outlet flows under static pressure; a portion of this material passes through the gaps between the bearings and between the stator and rotor, serving to lubricate and cool them. This material is the same as the medium being pumped, but as it passes through the bearings it may vaporize, so the pipeline may contain a two-phase mixture of vapor and liquid, which then returns to the vapor space at the pump inlet.
This pipeline is a vapor return line designed to prevent cavitation in the pump caused by gases generated when liquid enters the pump. By installing this return line, the generated gases can be discharged into the liquid storage tank, thereby effectively protecting the pump!
