On data acquisition networking for Siemens systems

I am currently dealing with the issue of data collection for a mechanical assembly production line. The control of each individual device is typically achieved using Siemens CPU224 processors. Now, a host computer is to be used for data collection; the PROFIBUS communication protocol is used for gathering data from the Siemens systems. Are there any better methods? I would appreciate everyone’s insights on this matter.
It is recommended to use Siemens WinCC for the host computer software, and to employ TCP/IP communication; there is no need to purchase a dedicated communication card to install on the computer.
