I would like to ask fellow sailors: how can one determine whether paint is water-based or oil-based? In other words, how do you determine whether water or a chemical diluent should be used as a diluent? Also, how can one determine the quality of paint? What are the regulations regarding the use of coatings in chemical manufacturing? Thank you all for your answers!
How can you tell whether paint is water-based or oil-based? In other words, how do you determine whether water or a chemical diluent should be used as a diluent? Also, how can one determine the quality of paint? What are the regulations regarding the use of coatings in chemical manufacturing? Thank you all for your answers! Personal opinion: As the name implies, water-based paint uses water as a solvent, and using water as a solvent is more environmentally friendly ; Judgment method: Assess without opening the package. Genuine water-based paints produced by reputable manufacturers come with complete information including the manufacturer’s name, production date, production license, ingredients, precautions, and labeling; the packaging is in good condition and the printing is clear ; After opening it, use a straw or small spoon to take a small amount of the substance and add it to water to see if it forms a homogeneous mixture with the water. Leave it aside for a few hours to check whether separation occurs; if there is separation, then organic solvents are present. If no separation occurs, then the substance used is either a solvent with similar polarity to water, or it is simply water ; If it has layers, then it’s fake or the solvent used is not water. Another method is to use smell to determine whether there is an aromatic odor; if so, it definitely contains substances with benzene rings. The quality of paint is determined by whether it is fine and uniform, free of particles, has a consistent color, and contains no bubbles. The methods mentioned above can only provide a preliminary assessment; to arrive at an accurate determination, certain chemical tests are required, or the sample must be sent to a quality control laboratory to reach a final conclusion! There are many regulations regarding the use of coatings in chemical manufacturing – which specific aspect are you referring to? There are fire-resistant, mold-resistant, etc. – each case needs to be analyzed on its own.
