At around 10 a.m. on August 29, 2011, an explosion occurred in storage tank No. 875 at the storage and transportation workshop of CNPC Dalian Petrochemical Branch, located in Ganjingzi District, Dalian. According to people on site who are aware of the situation, during operation by the staff, when the floating roof of the tank drops to the ground, an air layer is formed between it and the bottom of the tank. When the concentration of oil and gas (hydrogen contained in the oil) reaches a certain level, static electricity can cause a fire, leading to an explosion.

On August 29, 2011, a 20,000 m3 diesel storage tank in the storage and transportation workshop of a petrochemical company experienced an explosion during fuel receipt. One of the causes was the use of hydrogen stripping in the diesel hydrogenation process, which led to the accumulation of dissolved hydrogen in the gas space above the floating roof. The explosion limit of hydrogen: the lower limit is 4%, and the upper limit is 74.2%.
In May 2002, after a floating roof for a naphtha tank at a refinery was placed in place, smoke was observed on the top of the tank around 2 p.m.; the paint at the high-level manhole on the southwest side of the tank changed color, confirming that a fire had broken out inside the tank. Post-analysis, after the floating vessel landed, air entered the tank, and some ferrous sulfide accumulated at the high-level manhole, leading to spontaneous combustion.
