I’m facing a situation where I need to use a centrifugal pump together with a siphon tank to draw liquid from a storage tank; however, this tank is 50 meters away from the pump (in a parallel, horizontal position). I’ve handled distances of up to 20 meters before, so I’m not sure how to proceed, and I’d like to seek advice from those who are more experienced. The tank is located below the ground level; the liquid surface is 3 meters above the ground. Is it possible to transport the liquid under these conditions? Has anyone who has experienced this type of operating condition done so before? Could you please help me out? Thank you.
As long as your siphon tank is large enough, there’s no problem
Theoretically, by eliminating the resistance in the inlet pipeline, transmission over any length is possible; as long as the inlet pipe meets the pump’s requirements, 50 meters should be no problem.
Before deciding whether it is possible, at least the following six factors should be considered: a. The saturated vapor pressure of your liquid; b、The pressure in your tank ; c. The diameter of your siphon, etc ; d. Pump’s self-priming capacity (NPSHr) ; e. Minimum liquid level in the tank ; f、The height of the highest point of the siphon pipe above the pump inlet.
Calculate the resistance of the inlet pipeline and the vertical height difference; it should be less than the allowable suction height. The volume of the siphon tank should be 3 to 5 times the volume of the entire pipeline
Theoretically, it can be as far as needed; however, if the volume of your siphon tank is large, a professional, efficient, and powerful self-priming pump is required.
