Youth is worth remembering; it’s not meant only for reminiscence. Those long-past days of youth – the moments that can be recalled are all so beautiful and heartwarming. ----------------------------------------- Campus life seems so far in the past now, with memories becoming blurred. Back then, schools emphasized academic performance above everything else; I guess it’s still the case today. There wasn’t a culture of working on campus back then. The school provided part-time job opportunities for students in financial difficulty. I remember cleaning the common areas in the dormitory buildings; this task was usually done by the dormitory staff, but one had to apply personally, get recommendations from the student council, and then have it approved by the student affairs office. There weren’t many such job opportunities, so most people didn’t take part in them. ------------------------------------------------- The school also had some other part-time job programs, usually organized by various departments and requiring multiple people to work together. Some of these jobs were meant to provide assistance, and they were rotated among different classes. I participated in one such task during my school days – helping to move the materials from the department’s archive to another floor. Our class was assigned to do this task. ----------------------------------------- I remember that the whole class participated in it. We moved the materials from two rooms in the department’s archive to another floor. There were over 20 people in our class, mostly boys who did the lifting, while a few girls were responsible for organizing the materials. I saw many books and documents from the 1950s and 1960s, and I wondered if they were still useful. I asked the teachers, who said that those materials were needed for research, so we had to be very careful when moving them. We had to ask the teachers where each item should be placed before putting them on the shelves. The girls took care of organizing everything. It seemed like fun to me; it was like a group activity. It took less than an hour to finish the task. I don’t remember how much money the school provided as compensation; it was probably no more than five yuan. The class leader collected that money and used it as funds for a field trip. ------------------------------------- Youth is worth remembering; it’s not meant only for reminiscence.
