Is it necessary to use a dust extraction hood when performing TIG welding?

Some time ago, officials from the environmental protection agency in Dongtai came to our factory for an inspection. They saw our workers welding stainless steel pipes using TIG welding. The officials said that TIG welding generates welding fumes, and exhaust hoods must be installed to meet environmental regulations. Are such environmental requirements correct? Is it necessary to use a dust extraction hood for all welding tasks?
The purpose of exhaust or ventilation is to reduce the impact of welding fumes on workers, but it isn’t mandatory to have such systems in place; it depends on the working environment and conditions. This requirement does not apply to ordinary electric welding tasks. It’s not clear whether such a requirement exists in the procedures for TIG welding; what’s important is to minimize any risks to occupational health.

There’s nothing we can do; we have to ask the companies that produce environmental protection equipment to install ventilation systems. The environmental protection authorities are very strict these days.
