A thermal insulation ring is a supporting ring for the thermal insulation material surrounding tall, upright equipment such as towers. Flat steel with a thickness of 4 mm and a width of 80–120 mm is typically welded horizontally to the outer edge of the equipment. To save material and facilitate assembly, the insulation ring is not a continuous ring but is broken in the middle by 20–30 mm, consisting of four sections. Small holes of 5 mm are drilled every 50 mm along the outer edge of the ring to secure the insulation material. Generally, a weld is made every 3 meters or so along the height of the tower.
Insulation rings are usually installed on the water pockets or air pockets of towers, vertical vessels, or horizontal vessels that require insulation. It serves to provide segmented support for the insulation layer.
