Why is the evaporator a heat transfer device as well as a separation device?
In the case of a self-siphon reboiler, steam is generally used for heating; the light components exit through the upper pipeline while the heavy components remain at the bottom, which represents the most basic form of separation
An evaporator usually has a heat exchanger; this heat exchanger heats the medium. In the case of flash evaporation, the medium evaporates within the evaporator due to reduced pressure, generating secondary steam. The remaining unevaporated medium flows downward, while the secondary steam moves upward, thereby enabling vapor-liquid separation
It’s a simple principle: evaporation requires heating, and that’s what heat transfer equipment is for； After evaporation, a gas-liquid two-phase mixture is inevitably formed, and this is where separation equipment comes into play.
