Due to an operational error, some sodium sulfide entered the wastewater system; it was not noticed at first and ended up going directly into the UASB. On the second day, the COD and oil content in the UASB effluent increased from 1500 mg/L to 4000 mg/L, while the VFA level rose from 400 mg/L to 900 mg/L. 1. I suspect it’s hydrogen sulfide poisoning; could everyone help determine if this is the cause? 2. What is the tolerance of anaerobes to hydrogen sulfide or sulfide ions with a valence of -2? 3. What remedial measures should be taken in case of sulfur poisoning?
