I’ve come across a treatment scheme for potato wastewater, and I’m not sure if it’s feasible. I would appreciate everyone’s advice. The details are as follows: 1. Water quality: Inlet water – COD 40,000 mg/L, BOD 32,000 mg/L, ammonia nitrogen 75 mg/L, SS 2,500 mg/L, pH 4–5; Outlet water – COD 200 mg/L, BOD 120 mg/L, ammonia nitrogen 15 mg/L, SS 15 mg/L, pH 6–9. 2. Process used: IC anaerobic reactor + contact oxidation tank + equalization tank + micro-electrolysis + air flotation sedimentation tank + coagulation unit + secondary sedimentation tank + integrated biochemical treatment system. Questions: 1. Can starch-containing wastewater be fed directly into the anaerobic treatment unit? No preprocessing is required, such as grids or equalization tanks. 2. Can the treatment efficiency of the contact oxidation tank meet the requirements? 3. Is the placement of air flotation sedimentation and coagulation sedimentation appropriate? From some literature, air flotation units are generally installed before the IC stage to extract proteins; is it suitable to use them at the end, before coagulation sedimentation?
Personally, I think a buffer tank is needed before the IC to ensure its continuity and stability, and it can also help control the pH of the incoming water so as to guarantee smooth operation of the IC.
From the B/C perspective, the biodegradability is relatively good; are further measures necessary?
Could you provide a design plan, preferably with experimental data from a design institute, as this serves as the basis for the plan?
Firstly, the wastewater with a COD level of 40,000 has an excessive load for the IC tower, making it difficult to treat; it is possible to consider adding a chemical flocculation adjustment tank before the water enters the IC tower, in order to remove part of the COD first.
We have processed several such wastewater streams. This wastewater is treated for only 4 months per year, which needs to be taken into consideration when selecting equipment. Micro-electrolysis definitely shouldn’t be used later on. If you are interested, please contact us to discuss design experience in detail

The water volume shouldn’t be very large; it’s probably the water separated from the starch slurry in the starch factory, right?
