For catalytic reforming units, the aromatic potential content (Ar%) is commonly used in China to indicate the quality of feed oil. The meaning of aromatic potential content (Ar%) is similar to that of the reforming index (N+2A); it also describes the amount of naphthenes and aromatics in the feedstock. Its calculation formula is as follows: Ar% = a × C6N% + b × C7N% + c × C8N% + ∑Ar%. Here, a, b, and c are the conversion coefficients between C6, C7, and C8 naphthenes and aromatics, with their values being: a = molecular weight of benzene (78) / molecular weight of C6 naphthane (84) = 0.93 ； b = Molar mass of toluene (92) / Molar mass of C7 cycloalkane (98) = 0.94 ； c = Molar mass of xylene (102) / Molar mass of C8 naphane (112) = 0.95 ； ∑Ar% is the total aromatic content in the raw material. The contents of various hydrocarbons can be obtained from the composition analysis data of the crude oil.
In short, it’s about adjusting the octane rating of the feedstock itself; I’m not sure if that’s the correct way to put it
Potential refers to the inherent capacity of the material for alkanes to be converted into aromatics; the higher this potential, the higher the content of aromatics in the product. Octane number is a different concept.
