It is planned to install a new chlorate decomposition tank; brackish water is heated using a plate heat exchanger before being fed into the chlorate decomposition tank, and chlorine gas is recovered and sent back to the main chlorine pipeline. Is it necessary to fill the decomposition tank with nitrogen in this case? Is it suitable?
To understand what the effect of adding nitrogen is, if it serves no purpose, it’s better not to add it at all. The chlorate decomposition tank should be designed with pipes connected to a negative pressure line; if there is a problem with the tank, it is necessary to activate the negative pressure line and introduce air or nitrogen for displacement. Only after this can maintenance work be carried out.

There’s no need to fill it with nitrogen; the gas phase is connected to the main pipeline, and there are no problems at all. That’s how it works in our factory as well. Heating is not done using a heat exchanger – instead, steam is used directly to heat the chlorate reaction tank, and we’ve never had any issues with this approach.
No nitrogen is needed; after stopping, simply evacuate with negative pressure and replace it with air.
Nitrogen filling is used to prevent explosions caused by chlorine dioxide; once nitrogen is introduced, the chlorine that is produced during decomposition cannot enter the main chlorine pipeline, and must instead be absorbed by the accident handling device. Chlorine engineering is designed this way.
