For example, the cooling water is installed at the outlet, which ensures that the cooler is filled and can facilitate effective heat exchange; If installed at the inlet, the cooler may not be filled completely, resulting in waste and a higher risk of air blockages.
Control valves are more common after cooling; limiting the flow before cooling may cause the medium to vaporize.
The control valve for the top circulation flow rate of the distillation column in our workshop is located in front of the cooler; I don’t know why

Top circulation is used to control the temperature returning to the tower; if the outlet is controlled, low flow rates may cause the water in the heat exchanger to boil. To avoid hazards, it is necessary to control the inlet flow rate.

The principle is the same: top circulation is used for preheating the feed, while top circulation is used for cooling.
It still depends on your medium. For circulating water, it flows from the outlet of the heat exchanger – low in and high out; heat transfer oil usually has a separate circulation circuit to prevent the hot oil from entering directly. For steam, it flows from the inlet of the heat exchanger – high in and low out, which facilitates the removal of condensed water
