Catalyst feed analysis: Is it necessarily true that a feed with a higher distillation yield at 500°C is better than one with a lower distillation yield?
Crude oil is a complex mixture of multiple components with a wide boiling range, ranging from room temperature up to over 500°C. Therefore, whether it is for research or processing purposes, crude oil must be fractionated; the boiling range of each fraction is referred to as its boiling point range or distillation range. The boiling range refers to the temperature range between the initial boiling point and the dry point of a petroleum product. The boiling point range of the raw materials has a significant impact on cracking performance. Generally speaking, raw materials with high boiling points are easily adsorbed on the catalyst surface due to their large molecular weight, resulting in a faster cracking reaction rate. However, once the boiling point reaches a certain level, the opposite situation occurs due to slow diffusion, rapid carbon deposition on the catalyst surface, or poor vaporization. However, it is not sufficient to rely solely on the boiling range to predict the cracking behavior of feedstocks, as different feedstocks can have significantly different chemical compositions within the same boiling range.
