In a project I’ve been working on recently, sodium hydroxide storage tanks use steam internal coils to maintain the temperature of the solution inside the tanks. A problem was identified during the HAZOP analysis: how can leaks in these steam coils be detected? Has anyone encountered this situation before? Are there any good solutions?
The coil has inlet and outlet connections, allowing pressure fluctuations to be measured outside the container, which can help in detecting leaks in the steam coil
Install a pressure gauge or pressure transmitter in the coil system.
By installing a pressure monitoring device at the outlet of the coil, it is possible to observe changes in pressure.
The steam exiting the coil may contain a small amount of condensate, but if there is a leak inside, the pressure at the exit will change.
Measuring pressure fluctuations is definitely not feasible: there are too many factors that affect them.
Are there any good methods? It’s okay if it’s not online
The HAZOP analysis is \"too extreme\"; steam leaking into alkali solution isn’t a major accident, and there’s no need to treat it so seriously—regular inspections are sufficient.
However, it will affect the quality of the alkali solution, indirectly impacting production; there are no major safety issues; Furthermore, based on the owner’s experience, impurities in the steam may react chemically with the chemicals produced downstream, leading to accidents; such incidents have already occurred.
