Is isolation required for the communication link between Siemens’ explosion-proof touch screen and the PLC in the safe area? Is it necessary? Are there any clear explosion-proof specification guidelines?
Since it is an explosion-proof screen, it means it can withstand explosions, so there is no need for communication isolation.
Can touch screens be made intrinsically safe and explosion-proof? I’m hearing about this for the first time; could the poster tell us the model number?
Siemens’ TP700 series – all models under 12 inches in the Precision line are intrinsically safe and explosion-proof.
If it is intrinsically safe, the standards require that an intrinsically safe interconnection device, such as a safety barrier, must be present between the intrinsically safe and non-intrinsically safe devices. But I recall that Siemens’ touchscreens are all of the “N” type, so they’re not necessary.
That’s incorrect; Siemens’ TP1200 series products are spark-free and can be used in Zone 2 areas with explosion hazards, but not in Zone 1 areas or in intrinsically safe environments. Be sure not to make this mistake or let the supplier deceive you.

Let me summarize here. Siemens touchscreens are generally of type N explosion-proof. The n-type explosion-proof type, along with intrinsically safe and flameproof types, also belongs to a category of explosion protection methods. N-type materials can generally only be used in Zone II, with the exception of the nl type (which is now classified as intrinsically safe).
