Let’s take a look at a conventional methanol distillation tower: is it better to use shell-and-tube exchangers or coiled exchangers at the top of the tower, for a processing capacity of 1 ton per hour?
Specify the pressure, temperature, and flow rate for the shell and tube sides. The equipment can be determined only after performing process calculations for selection. However, typically the manufacturing cost of shell-and-tube heat exchangers is lower, and their design is more mature.

Coiled heat exchangers are expensive and difficult to clean; it is estimated that their heat exchange efficiency is not much better than that of ordinary tube heat exchangers.
