The difference between anionic and cationic flocculants lies in their performance.

Anionic flocculants (with negative charges) and cationic flocculants (with positive charges) are used differently based on their electrical charges. Anionic flocculants are applied to wastewater containing suspended particles, high concentrations of such particles, particles with positive charges, as well as wastewater with a neutral or alkaline pH – including wastewater from steel plants, electroplating plants, metallurgical facilities, and coal washing plants. Cations are used in the treatment of wastewater containing organic substances, such as in urban sewage treatment, the chemical industry, printing and dyeing, and slaughterhouses.
